It's happened. Cora has discovered candy. Jelly beans. Skittles. Gummies. Marshmellows. We managed to escape halloween, got by Christmas with only a few tiny tiny pinches of fudge, but Easter snuck up on us.
Cora had an Easter Egg hunt at school, with a visit from the Easter Bunny.
I loved three things about the hunt:
1. Cora wasn't terrified by the Easter Bunny.
2. She kind of got in to the "egg-hunting" routine (once she saw what her good friend Dane was doing. I'm telling you - she's been running with the boys at school).
3. I had Quinn with me, too. Anytime any other kid approached her (she was in her carrier sitting on the floor for a few minutes), Cora hopped up and came running, screaming, "no no no no no". That's so funny, because we've NEVER yelled "no no no" when Cora approaches Quinn. Cora was clearly being protective of her baby sister.
Some other pics from the party...
Cora was a little hesitant about the bunny, but her good friend Dane was not. Dane is ALL boy, and he's got the stalky build of a little football player, but he is the classic gentle giant. He is so sweet.
Cora treats Quinn's papason chair (technically formerly Cora's papason chair) as if it is her personal recliner.
Grandma M sent Cora an Easter Basket - Cora discovered candy this Easter. She's figuring out that the brighter the color, the better the taste, so when she sees something that LOOKS like candy, she gets really ansy. She also had some trouble tellin the difference between the marshmellows (sent from Grandma M) and the packing peanuts (also sent from Grandma M). It was really funny!
An outfit for Quinn came on a hanger - Cora got really excited. She loves to walk around the house with hangers.
Cora had on Landon's t-shirt. It's a little big.
We broke out the sprinkler and baby pool on Sunday. Landon and I started out running through the sprinkler to show her how. We both took off, leaping and squealing, being over dramatic to show her how. She followed... but refused to run through the sprinkler. She ran parallel to the sprinkler, staying on the outside, but squealing and leaping just the same.
She made it all the way through the house in these shoes. Such a girl.
I took this pic to show our house in the A.M. When we woke up 45 minutes earlier, the house was ENTIRELY straightened. Somehow, only a few minutes later, toys and shoes were everywhere and there was a tricycle in the foyer.
We tried to get a pic of Cora & Quinn together, but she was having nothing to do with it.
This pic cracks me up!
Erin & the pope. I loved this pic.
Farmer's Market Saturday. 2 hours past naptime. You can't see it very clearly here, but Landon's facial expression totally said "Yes, I've walked all the way across Marion Square carrying a squirming Cora and dragging a stroller behind..."

The Quinn-sanity Continues!
"New Baby Week" meant a ton of fun for Cora.
When Cora was born, friends from work sent flowers with a tricycle. We saved the tricycle to put together new this week - she loves it!
Quinn has some major biceps.
Cora must have some major biceps, too. That wet sponge is nearly as big as her.
Cora is very concerned about the dirt on the car. She's her dad's daughter.
I wonder where they're from? You'd think that their team was on the way to the NCAA championship or something.
Cora has definitely gotten A LOT of attention this week.
Cora had her first ride on the bike for the year.
She smiled the whole time. She loves it.
Quinn's first bath.
Sweet baby! She smells so good after her bath. I wish I could freeze time.

Do not judge
When my baby cousin Summer was born, I was 6. That didn't stop me from having a bottle with her anytime I could convince Mimaw Eb to make me one. So I didn't think it was strange when I found Cora "two-fisting" Quinn's binkies.
Cora was just making sure Quinn's binkies are up to code.

Quinnsanity
This morning, Paul Messal sent Landon and I a text:
"How are y'all dealing with the 'Quinnsanity'? See what I did there, Quinn-sanity, get it... it's like Quinn and insanity, get it. I pray that that joke hasn't been previously made. Anyway, hope everyone is doing well, I'm sure the emotions are Quinndescribable... okay, I'll stop (no I won't)."
Of course that sparked a series of texts...
Landon (to Paul & I): It's pretty Quinncredible!!! Thanks for asking! BTW noone had used that before.
Paul (to Landon and I): YES!!!
She really is Quinncredible, and Quinndescribable, and we are feeling a little Quinnsanity!
Landon (to Carrie, later in the day): You're Carrific!!
Carrie (to Landon): Life with you is pure Landemonium! (like Pandemonium?)
And, we both agree that our older daughter is Cordorable.
If these two kids grow up to be very Meesy... or should it be Chessel? (like Cheesy and Messal combined? Maybe that doesn't work...) then you'll know that they came by it honestly!

A few Cora pics...
A few pics from Cora before Baby Quinn...
I think if I would put some effort into potty training, she would get it. This is her second potty seat (I picked up this one for downstairs), and with both potty's, she has totally acted like she knew what to do with it. It might be time to start trying...
I gave her a box of cookie cutters I keep in the kitchen cabinet. I found her in the living room doing this again. And again. And again. The kid really needs more toys!
Oh Briggity!
Just another morning with Cora Jane...
Cora's last morning before the arrival of Quinn!

Naming Quinn
"Oh come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn."
--- From "The Mighty Quinn" by Bob Dylan
Quinn went without a name for a full 24 hours. It's hard naming a baby when you aren't for sure whether you are naming a boy or a girl. We did some serious debate about boy's names (we were really far apart on these), and had finally settled on a boy first name that we both loved, and had several middle names that we were bouncing around.
And, we had an arsenal of girl names that we both loved. Landon had always preferred Caroline, and I really liked it, too. I really preferred Quinn, and Landon also thought that was a good name. And, just a few hours before Quinn was born, the name Piper came up, and we both called that one our wild card. We decided that we would need to meet our baby before saying for sure.
And then we met Quinn. We might have been a little thrown off at first. She looked so much like Cora when she was first born, that at first it was hard to identify her personality. We passed her back and forth. We named different names to see her reaction. We listed all of our names (included some not in our top 3) on the white board of the hospital room. We took a couple of good naps. I took a long bath. We weighed the pros and cons of each name. Finally, we decided we needed a lifeline, so we decided to take a poll AND ask some friends. Outside of our hospital room, we posted a sheet asking the hospital staff and visitors to mark which name they preferred. We also each picked 6 friends (Landon cheated and sent his text to many more) asking for their preference. And, Landon found a website called Namipedia that is FULL of awesome info.
Something funny happened. With our friends, Caroline won by a landslide. At the hospital, Piper came out of the gate really strong, and when nurses came in and they told us why, it was that Caroline seemed really overused to them (something we wanted to avoid). Namipedia's info had Cora, Quinn, and Caroline all ranked equally in several qualities ("A person with this name sounds smart..."; "A person with this name sounds professional..."; "A person with this name sounds elegant..."), both Quinn and Caroline were kind of similar in general popularity (Quinn is less popular than Caroline) and both were paired with sibling names similar to Cora, like Elanore. Namipedia also has a regional ranking (the data person in me LOVES this website), and it was clear that Caroline is a name of the southeast whereas Quinn doesn't have a regional association.
When the poles started coming in, I was pretty disappointed that Quinn didn't do better (which is telling), and I think Landon felt pretty swayed by the news from the nurses that they didn't vote for Caroline based on how many Caroline's that they knew. And, a lot of our friends reported that while they liked Piper, they were worried that Piper didn't fit in a boardroom (and what if our little girl eventually wants to dominate a boardroom?). Plus, a certain personality might have earned her the name Piper, but honestly, she didn't act very Pipey! Quinn it was.
We originally were choosing meaningful middle names, but in all honesty, neither of us liked the cadence of either of the middle names with Quinn and we only liked them for their meaning. Landon has always loved Elise, and Elise was in the front running of names for both Quinn and Cora (and, it helps that my friend from work Amy has a delightful 8 year old named Elise, and we always like our interactions with her; that is the only Elise that we think we know). Landon declared that Elise would be Quinn's middle name, and I agreed.
We did not give any thought to the lyrics of Dylan's song when we were naming Quinn (I was reminded of it from Namipedia AFTER Quinn was already named, and the only part of the song I recognized is the chorus. Landon NEVER recognizes lyrics, so he can't remember it).
From Wikipedia: "The subject of the song is the arrival of the mighty Quinn (an Eskimo), who changes despair into joy and chaos into rest, and attracts attention from the animals. The metaphorical lyrics have prompted suggestions that Quinn is a village elder."
So in the song Quinn is a boy, and an eskimo, and maybe even a village elder.
But... so far, Quinn fits the personality of Dylan's Quinn.
She's calming.
She's laidback.
We can't believe that she's only been with us for 5 days.
And I know that it is too early for her to smile, but she frequently gives us the sweetest little sleepy grin.
She might just be a peacemaker.
