Quinny at bedtime

Quincy is super fussy tonight.
In her bed she has...

2 baby dolls
Plus a little baby doll
Plus a Disney princess baby
Plus two cloth Easter baskets
Plus 2 baby doll bottles
Plus her lovey
Plus goofy doll
A light-up lady bug
Her lovey, Flower
And a book

I'm pretty certain all this stuff will end up in our bed by morning.
Heck, I feel like we're sleeping with nearly all that stuff by the time she hauls her goods into our bed every night!!!

Grinny Quinny

Last week I showered after the girl's bath, and let them brush my hair while I dried it.
I don't want to forget the look on my little Quinn's face. She loved brushing my hair. She's brush a stroke, then pull my shoulders to the side, leaning herself in the opposite direction to see my face, smile a really wide smile, announce "pretty", then repeat on the other side.

Such a joyful soul.

The politics of "Who gets to be the Mommy"

Over dinner this week, Cora announced that she hoped one of her friends wasn't at school the next day. I asked why. She explained that this friend ALWAYS has to be the Mommy at school.

If you know Cora, you know that she has a lot of moxie... and the other little girl is the youngest in the class AND is the tiniest in the class, so honestly, if she's bossing Cora, then good for her!

Me: Why is E always the "Mommy"?
Cora: If E is there, she is ALWAYS the mommy and I have to be the neighbor's mommy because I don't like being E's baby because E is bossy. E just wants to be the mommy I guess.
Me: Well, what if E isn't there?
Cora: It depends. If J is there then J likes to be the mommy because she is the biggest and I don't mind being her baby. Sometimes S is the mommy. Maeve and I play mommy and baby a lot and we always take turns. V & H will sometimes play like they are the baby, but they're little so they make good baby's. It's hard to find a daddy. S from the Sunflower class will play daddy if he is in the room, and sometimes we can get E to play the daddy and I play the daddy sometimes if I have to but we really like to have a boy like Jack or Luke except Jack or Luke or Leo will never play like they're the daddy... and sometimes we just use a baby doll to be the baby and we're all the mommies. It really depends on who is there today. But if E is there then only she wants to be the mommy.
[then very matter-of-fact and with so much sincerity that I could hardly contain my grin]...

"It makes sense, really."

She sounded just like her Mommy.

Questions for God...

The favorite book from Quinny's birthday was "You are Special" by Max Lucado. Huge hit about a wooden doll maker.

And that book sparked a very serious car conversation.

Cora: Mommy, who made my toys?
Me: [I remember Cora's questions better than my answers] Cora, people made your toys.
Cora: Why?
Me: [I saw where this was going, so I launched into a chat about God made some people specifically for being good at making toys and that God made her specifically to be good at something, too...]
Cora: What?
Me: I don't know... [I'm sure I said more than just that]
Cora: God was Jesus's Daddy?
Me: Yes, that's right.
Cora: So who was Joseph?
Me: Well, God is our spiritual Father, too, and Landon is your Daddy on earth.
Cora: Oh. Well, but [lots of stammering here] why did God choose to have...a.... son?

I think somebody has heard a few too many questions about whether we hope this baby is a boy...

A few gems from Landon's Phone

It's always a treat when I intentionally download pics from Landon's phone, then find months worth of random candids that I didn't remember or didn't notice. A few...

Coming from Gainesville, we found this. That's right - it's a single-wide trailer elevated above a barn. There's a porch built on. Can't say we'd ever noticed that before. Had to circle back twice to get a picture.

At Furman vs. Citadel.
I'm not sure where this was taken...

As we were leaving, Landon took Cora up to see his classroom. She still talks about where Daddy sits when he is at school.

Cora built this castle (with a little help from us). Quinn decided it was for her. A perfect fit.

Cora picked-up Cora downtown before running to the Citadel for a haircut.
She was so excited to see a parade.

Our house.

Before Cora outgrows this, I want to write it down.
Cora calls "diapers" "biapers". It's super cute.

Quinny - on a stool so she can see what's happening in the kitchen.

Quinny's bday party!

With Sid and Nicole at The Obstinate Daughter.

A regular Sunday dinner at the Groeber's. The Sullivan family joined, too. Between us, we have A LOT of kids.

Quinn's nighttime strategy

It's blurry, but I love that pic.

Quinn moved to a toddler bed about 2 months ago, which gives her freedom to roam to our bed at night.

Quinn pitter-patters in (I always know which one is coming by the sound of their feet), puts her face within inches of mine, and then starts lobbing her loot over my body (usually baby + lovey + water cup + a book) before climbing-up on the bedrail, grabbing my gown to hoist herself up, rolling over my body, to land between us. Always my side. I'll admit that sometimes I barely remember waking up for her entrance.

I will 100% admit I love having my babies in the bed with us... when they actually sleep. The problem is that they don't always sleep, and then EVERYONE is cranky all day long.

So we've started nipping this in the bud. I usually wake up after the 2nd toy gets lobbed over my body, then carry a writhing and screaming Quinny back to her bed (a great wake-up call).

And here's the tricky part. She's figured us out. She literally gives me just enough time to fall back asleep, and then she brings all of her loot again strategically to Daddy's side of the bed, because he is sleeping more soundly than me.

Sometimes this works. Our little trickster.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm a bit sad to report that Cora may be outgrowing the phase of getting in bed with us. She often comes in around 5:30 or 6, but now that she's in a big-girl twin bed, she hardly ever ventures over in the middle of the night. I miss her.

But I should knock on wood anyways.

First of our Favorite Beach Days of Summer

By the time Landon got home from his morning run, I had most of our stuff packed for the beach.

Quinn was packed, too...

Check out this ensemble. Quinn is known in the neighborhood as the bag lady because she often carries all of this stuff with her. Here, an easter basket, a baby, a dog purse, a stroller...

I heard Landon telling someone that she comes by this legitimately because this is how I look every morning when I exit the house - lunch boxes, work bag, nap blankets, breakfast, preferred toys for car, cup of Joe...

Quinn DOES have cute PJs, I promise, but with her wanting-to-dress-myself for bed trend is her and-I'll-choose-my-clothes-trend. We fight the trend in the morning for school; we're not crazy enough to fight the trend for bedtime.

Notice the headband? She's been doing this a lot lately.

April 5, 2014

If you ever need a picture of something that makes me happy, the pic above is it. Or any of the pics below. So happy.

Quinn has been carrying this Target babydoll from 2 years ago everywhere this month. We constantly hear, "My Baby". Just last weekend, we were all in the car after church running some errands. Quinn had been quiet for a really long time - we were even doing a regular subtle glance to see if she was asleep. Out-of-the-blue, unprovoked, we heard a demanding, "No. My baby".

In fact, she says it so much that now when she reaches for something, anything, she also says, "My baby".

I worried the beach would ruin the doll. Landon reminded me that he counted 16 similar babydolls in our house that could be put in this dress and she'd never know the difference. Fact.

The whole time we were at the beach we kept commenting on how easy this beach phase is. Both girls are scared of the waves right now, so they wouldn't even think of running in. The beach is empty this time of year, so they'd have to wander really far for us to lose track of them. Neither needs to constantly potty or have a diaper change. And they basically eat the same foods we eat, so packing for the beach was like packing for us to go in the old pre-kid days, except for the big bag of castle-building equipment we hauled. OF COURSE we're starting all over in August, so another 2 years of sand-eating eye-rubbing puff-packing beach days.

Landon was doing some push-ups; everyone joined in for a push-up session (he'd remind me to tell you he has better form than this - this was completely a break for a push-up lesson).

I love that Quinn decided to lose her arms on this one. Why not?

Ah, poor Quinny. Eat my dust!

Some beach flops.

We were a little surprised - neither of us realized she had gotten so good at this.

Quinn had to give flopping a try to; it usually just involved standing with her hands up in the air and thinking about flopping.

The girls were watching a little girl their age playing alone with her Mommy two blankets over. Cora kept asking that we ask her if she wanted to come play; we insisted that she go ask. She of course enlisted the help of Quinn. The rest of the day consisted of play with Lucy, age 3.

It's the first weekend in April. I promise we sunscreen our children; this particular morning in April, both were wearing SPF 50. Still, they turn golden brown. Our little coppertone babies.

Cora has been practicing the splits. I'm not sure how much longer we're going to be able to hold off on ballet or gymnastics class. She pretends like she's on her way to dance class all of the time... I'd like to wait until Quinn is old enough to enroll with her. We'll see.

We came home. Quinn napped. Cora and I made invites for the neighborhood Easter Egg hunt, then went for a bikeride to distribute the invites. I came back to find Quinn asleep on the driveway like this. She woke, so Daddy brought her out to cuddle in a chair. She got hot and laid herself on this blanket, snoozing for another hour. Our sweet Quinn.

Eyes for daddy

Our little ParisHilton.

I love this pic.

Cora brought Landon this pic and announced "here's a picture Jesus took of us and we're both adults." Ophelia complex?!??

Look at my girls loving on daddy!
